Taipei Bus Station Case Study:
Improving Speed and Accuracy of Passenger Information
Collecting, organizing, and communicating multiple types of transportation information to passengers requires a system that is well integrated and easy to manage. Customers expect to receive live-time updated information in multiple locations when travelling. The Taipei Station Bus Terminal, as part of the Main Zone Station in Taipei, required a fully-integrated, efficient and effective digital signage solution
Challenges: The Taipei Main Station Zone in Taiwan is part of an urban development project that houses a new transportation hub consisting of the Taiwan High Speed Rail, Taiwan Railway, MRT, Taipei city bus and inter-city bus transfer terminal. It also includes residential buildings, offices, a hotel, movie theaters, and retails stores.

The Solution: The Taipei Bus Station chose the WebDT digital signage solution consisting of 100 robust signage appliances, the SA2000, and the WebDT Content Manager software for real-time information updates of data and playlists from any location. They also chose a WebDT IR47, a 47” display with IR touch with an integrated SA2000.

With the vivid and high-definition display performance, the WebDT IR47 provides a new interactive experience for passengers to get details for exploring the station and surrounding area. The reliable hardware and customizable software, along with the outstanding service and competitive pricing made the WebDT digital signage system the clear choice for the Taipei Bus Station.
The SA2000’s are integrated with 42” displays and are in the 1F - 4F area of the bus terminal, including the entrances, ticket counter area and arrival and departure platforms. Content includes bus travel information and news; infotainment-advertising, bus status, ticketing information and service staff details; station managers are shown bus capacity updates and arrival and departure status. See the content by location section for more details.

The WebDT Content Manager software enables real-time information updates across multiple screens for this premier property, providing efficient and effective remote management of content displayed throughout the bus terminal. WebDT Content Manager (WCM) also enables customization options, such as integrating with 3rd party database systems to access information and RSS feeds, and event-triggered updates. The web-based WCM offers an intuitive interface for straightforward maintenance, management and updates. With flexible and customizable screen layouts, multiple zones and multiple layout styles are easily incorporated for dynamic designs. WebDT Content Manager incorporates live updates for data and playlists from remote sites.
The WebDT SA2000 communicates with the central WebDT Content Manager Server on a regular interval. When the bus station clerk changes the data on the WCM server in the events base, the data will then be re-loaded onto the SA2000 for playback. WCM server will periodically compare & update data from the Database server as needed.

Results:

With the WebDT Signage System, The Taipei Bus Station is able to efficiently and effectively manage a digital signage network and provide needed information to employees and visitors, as well as generate revenue with compelling digital advertising.
  Improved Customer Communications
Through vivid displays and digital content, real-time information and video playback for advertisements are easily broadcasted and updated via the network. Reports can be generated for proof-of-play for billing purposes as well. Customers can now get the exact details they need specific to their location in the bus terminal, and also receive vital updates immediately.
  Improved Productivity and Accuracy
WebDT Content Manager together with integration of the database system enables an accurate and efficient work flow. As data can be changed quickly and frequently, there is less time elapsed between updates, keeping the information timely. With WebDT Content Manager software, bus information, current status updates, ticket prices, advertisements, and news can be published regularly or changed instantly. Staff are more productive with their time as they are no longer required to manually update an LED display, or print and put up a poster. Staff can now control the signage system remotely, from any location with access to the network.

  Seamless Integration, Green operations
As DT Research is the manufacturer of both hardware and software for the digital signage network components, compatibility is guaranteed for smooth installation and operation. The WebDT signage product’s flexibility and usability made it effective to integrate with the bus station’s 3rd-party database system for all the tracked data. The system was able to customize the data feed of content so that as events occur (arrival, departure, delays); the entire system can receive the updates automatically. The rugged WebDT signage appliances are energy efficient, the low power consumption saves on energy use and service costs. The WebDT Signage System is scalable, so the Taipei Bus Terminal can expand their system to fit growing needs, ensuring future additions will not require a re-work of the entire system.
